Real Life
Magic
Focus on: Adam Sowden
The point of Real Life Magic is to express what it is to be a magician.
Magic itself is hard to describe – it’s a way of living,
not just a set of principles or ideals. I tell these stories because to
me they express in personal terms the wonder that it is to live a
magical life. Because, believe it or not, you can live the life you
always wanted – it’s really just one tiny step away.
It’s so close, and yet this step can be difficult to take,
because it is a step outside of your comfort zone – a step into
the mystery – a step beyond what you know. This is why the
training is so powerful, because it actually takes you out into the
void. It trains you to powerfully move beyond the things that are
holding you back, and it gives you the tools to become who you really
are.
I’m going to tell you about Adam Sowden. He’s a good friend
and colleague of mine, and in my opinion, one of the best examples I
have seen of creating a magical life.
When I first approach Adam for an interview he is somewhat reluctant.
Normally a big talker – he is a bit shy about telling the wider
community his story.
“The point of the article should be about magic,” he says,
“I’m not interested in trying to impress people. It’s
not that I’m a remarkable person – it’s that magic
works. If you use it – you can create
everything you want.”
I nod and lean back into my chair. Sitting on his balcony, looking out
over the ocean, I can see the results all around me. Only two years
after starting his first training and Adam has created a home in Byron
Bay, a beautiful wife and son, a flourishing business, great cash flow,
and he is really relaxed about all of it. We hear the sound of his wife
and son gurgling at each other in the next room, and he grins at me as
we get down to the interview.
“So where were you at before you did the training?” I ask.

“To be honest,” he said, “I was over self development
work. I had done everything you can imagine, in fact I think I had
spent over 150 grand on various different courses and I was pretty
cynical. I got to the point where I thought I just needed to get over
the myth that I could live a magical life and move on, get a job and
get real.”
He also tells me he was broke – up to his eyeballs in debt, in a
tumultuous and volatile relationship that was not giving him what he
wanted, and working in an area that was not satisfying.
“I was trying to get ahead financially, and trying to make my
relationships work,” he says, “but looking back on it I was
really just resolving the pain of being alive.”
I ask him what he thought of the first weekend of the training.
“I’ll tell you what,” he says, “I went in there
not expecting much. I was really jaded by my experiences with self
development in the past. But weekend one totally blew my mind. I
thought, where can it go from here? I was getting more from one weekend
of the training than I had expected to get from the whole eight month
course.”
He laughs and says, “to be honest, every weekend was like that
for me. I was continually blown away by what I was learning. I
didn’t believe William when he promised we would be intuitive
masters by the end of the course, but now I run my own business as an
intuitive coach so even that was more true than I realised.”
I ask him how it was that he was able to turn everything around in his life, so fast, and seemingly with such ease.
“Well, very early on I lost everything that I thought was
important to me,” he tells me. “My dad who had been ill for
most of my childhood, died two weeks before the training began. I lost
my job one week after the course began. And my relationship broke down
around the same time. These things were all difficult at the time, but
now I feel that it was lucky. All I had left was to dedicate myself to
this work so that is what I did.”
I don’t really believe in luck – I think luck is created by
those who are prepared to go for what is in their heart. And to his
credit, Adam really did that, and literally turned his shitty
circumstances into gold.
Business:
“I built a business from nothing in 12 months. 2 years ago I was
deeply in debt and falling further, and my self esteem was low because
I thought that being broke meant I was a bad person. These days I am
supporting two other people, paying higher rent, and running my own
flourishing
business with ease. I was worried about finances before we had Leo, but
I went for it anyway, and in the month he was born I cleared $50,000. I
feel like I am never lacking in money. In the past my
relationship with money was all about fear – even when I was
doing okay financially I couldn’t relax, because of what might be
coming around the next corner.”
“Plus,” I say, “you weren’t really doing what you wanted to do, were you?”
“No,” he says, “I thought it was okay at the time,
but looking back on it now the work I was doing with people was really
controlling and very mentally orientated and was not satisfying to me.
I knew deep down I wasn’t making the kind of difference I wanted
to make.
“I now work from home, using my intuition to help people create
what is most precious to them. It’s really easy and creates great
results in their lives. It comes so naturally to me that sometimes I
can’t
believe I get paid for it.”
Relationship:
A few months into the training, Adam met Claire and began a
relationship with her that was totally different to the volatile ones
he had in the past.
“The second I saw her I knew. Rationally, I thought, this is
ridiculous! She is nothing like what I normally go for! But my heart
told me to go for it so I did.”
“I’ve never been this comfortable before,” he says,
“always, in the past, my relationships were conditional and
really intense. I think what my little brother said at our wedding
expresses it the best: it’s no bells and whistles, it’s
just real.”
I ask him to explain what he means by this.
“Well, in the past, I thought I wanted something glamorous,
something really amazing. And all I ended up with was shit. My
relationship with Claire is not about the thrill – it’s not
spectacular, or mind boggling, it’s just really sweet, really
real, and really satisfying.”
“Tell me what Claire is to you,” I say.
“That’s easy,” he says, “she makes my heart sing.”
The Move:
Towards the end of his first year of training, Adam started receiving
intuitive guidance to move to Byron Bay. Initially he could not see how
he could do it.
“I mean, I knew I would love to live in Byron,” he says,
“because it is a beautiful area, and because I really wanted to
work with William at The Magician’s Way, but I couldn’t see
how I could make it work financially, and I wasn’t sure if Claire
would come with me, or where we would live…”
Part of living intuitively is to just take the action that you get to
take, even when it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, so in the
end Adam moved anyway, into a big house in Ocean Shores, with a 180
degree view of the ocean and a big pool. The size of the house
didn’t make sense at the time, but then, that was before Leo came
along….
The Wedding:
“How about your wedding,” I ask, enjoying exploring all
these aspects of Adam’s life, “I know it was an amazing
event, because I was there, but tell me about the creating of it.”
“Well,” he says enthusiastically, “that story starts
with the proposal. I got an intuitive hit to ask Claire to marry me in
song. I didn’t know how I was going to make that up, but the song
just came to me while I was driving and I swear it was like being
possessed. I was driving and writing the song out loud and bawling my
eyes out. My soul just spoke to me and the words flowed out. It was one
of the most creative experiences I have ever had.”
Adam and Claire sat down to envisage what they would love to create for
their wedding. At that time, it seemed like a difficult task.
“The wedding was another potential problem” he says,
“because I had no idea where the money was going to come from.
But again, we trusted to magic, and things unfolded really well. We
created a magical wedding that was everything we wanted for a fraction
of the cost and the money
literally came from nowhere. Claire was practically gifted with her
dress, made by a professional award winning designer, our guest list
was exactly who we wanted to come, and it was a really beautiful event.
At the last minute we were even gifted with enough money to have an
overseas honeymoon!”
I remember Adam on the day. I remember the nerves while he waited for
his bride. I remember the rose petals that were scattered by pretty
nieces, and the look in both their eyes as they said their vows. It was
a beautiful day. I can vouch for that.
Leo:
“And now we come to the best bit,” I say. “Tell me
about Leo.” I can tell Adam won’t get bored of this subject.
“Claire and I saw Leo in meditation long before he came
along,” he says. “We even knew when he was going to come,
but we thought that was way to soon so we planned for a year or two
later. But then suddenly Claire was pregnant.”
“Were you scared?” I ask.
“Yeah, Of course I was,” he says, “none of it seemed
to make any sense. Soul was telling us that this was the right time and
it would all work out, but do you think my mind would believe that? I
was terrified about where the money would come from, the newness of our
relationship, about what it would really mean to be a dad. Claire was
freaking out too.”
“At some point in all the panic, we tuned in, and realised that we just had to have this baby, no matter what.”

“Leo is the thing for me now. The responsibility is a bit
confronting, but I tell you, this is the most peaceful I have ever
felt. When Leo burps – I think wow! That’s great –
and it feels like a real achievement. I’ve never felt more
grounded.”
I can well believe it. Claire and Adam dote over their son. You can see
the light shining in their eyes when they look at him. And to be fair
– he is a gorgeous little boy.
From the outside, Adam’s life looks pretty good. Of course there
is always room for more creating and more magic, but that’s the
fun of it. I ask Adam to sum it all up for me – what has changed
for him underneath the surface?
He doesn’t think for very long before saying, “you, know,
it’s ironic. I always wanted a movie lifestyle and now I have a
normal life and it’s pure bliss.”
“In the past I spent my life searching for something. I’m
not searching any more. I’ve found what I was looking for –
the piece of me that cannot be taken away. I’ve settled into
myself like I never could before. The training delivered me to my
heart. I mean, imagine! I live a life where I just do what I want.
It’s a life of following my intuition and constantly being
blessed by the results. What I am learning about now is my capacity to
enjoy my life.”
He laughs. “I’m happy,” he says. “I’ve had the best year of my life.”
