Welcome Fellow Magician The Magicians Way by William Whitecloud

From Armani Sandals to Thongs by Jamie Louise Bloom

We’ve just finished another Magician’s Way weekend and once again, I’m blown away. This time we looked at macro-structural patterning, or in other words, the sequential steps we follow when we go to create something in our lives and don’t succeed.

William explained that no matter what we attempt to create, we always follow the same steps, and always in the same sequence. Even though we had an example in front of the class, I still found it hard to believe that it would apply to my seemingly varied stories.

He’d asked us to think of at least four recent stories of times when we’d gone to create something and failed. It took me a while to come up with them (even though there were plenty), because he specified that the stories had to be complete, and that we’d stopped trying to create them.

We were split into pairs and shown how to extract the steps and identify the overall pattern that existed. As I related my four stories, I felt sorry for my partner, who I thought had a major task in front of her to find the common thread between them.

My first story was about creating my apartment earlier this year. I’d wanted to live on Campbell Parade at Bondi Beach, but ended up in a small studio in the back of Bronte. The second story was about being rejected by a guy I’d liked, the third was about not getting a writing job, and the fourth was about not creating the coach I’d wanted.

Even as my partner was asking me the questions to clearly identify each step, I couldn’t see the correlation. It wasn’t until she finished and looked at me with glee that I realised she must have identified a pattern.

“In every story, you start off going for Armani sandals, but end up settling for a pair of thongs,” she announced.

“Huh?” I eloquently replied.

She explained my pattern.
“You start with a very clear vision of what you want, and then you make a cursory attempt to see if what you want is available. It doesn’t appear to be, and so you talk to others, and they confirm that what you’d love isn’t possible.”

I thought of how I’d done that with my home, and how it hadn’t seemed that finding a place on Campbell Parade was possible.

“You then let go of the original vision, and instead look for lesser alternatives that you believe are possible,” she added.

Again, I saw how I’d done it by starting to look outside of Bondi, and away from the beach.

“After you find a lesser option, you start doubting your choice, and it’s at this point that you are reminded of your original vision, which suddenly seems possible after all,” she said.

But then you repeat the same steps: you make a cursory attempt to find it, it appears impossible, and then you talk to others to confirm it is impossible. You may repeat this process a few times, before you finally give up and accept your lesser alternative.”

I was stunned. That is exactly what happened in every story. Just before I’d put in my rental application, I’d received a call from a house-sitting job in a mansion overlooking the water at Avalon. Even though I’d decided I didn’t want the job, it did remind me of my original vision to live overlooking Bondi beach.

As I walked the next morning around to Bondi, I was again reminded by a sudden vision in my mind of a “For Lease” sign in the window of an apartment overlooking the beach. I was so intrigued that I kept walking all the way around to Campbell Parade to see if what I’d imagined was really there. Indeed, as I approached the street, I could see it was there: a big blue sign hanging in the window of one of the waterfront apartments. I felt this eerie sense as I fished out my mobile phone from my bag to enter the real estate agent’s number and was still in a trance when I called him to arrange a viewing of the apartment that afternoon.

As my partner identified, though, it was at this stage that I repeated the earlier steps of my pattern: I half-heartedly checked out the apartment, which seemed impossible (this time, way out of my price range) and when I talked to my friend who I was staying with at the time, he dissuaded me, saying I wasn’t going to be able to get a place like that with my incomplete financial and rental records.

I also started to panic about having also already paid my bond on the Bronte apartment, and I decided it was too much: I gave up on the vision of living on the beach at Bondi and instead decided to pick up the key and move into Bronte.

After the top-level pattern was revealed, William then guided us through the next three levels, which were even more incredible to see. He stressed that it was only the first attempt at revealing our patterns, and that our homework for the month was to work in our teams to reveal a more complete pattern, however I’d already learned so much. Now, rather than fooling myself into thinking I was creating what I wanted, I would be able to identify when I was actually giving up on my vision of Armani sandals and instead settling for thongs.

Just as I think I’ve gotten everything I can possibly get from this training, it surprises me again.

Have a magical month.

Love, Jamie
