Stop coping – it’s killing you! Magic is about orientation by William Whitecloud. Before I write a single word, I just have to say, “Thanks, Carly. Thanks a lot!”
Carly is my publicist and she has just called me at 9:45 pm, as I am dozing off in front of the telly, to blithely inform me that Living Now want a sixteen hundred word article from me by 9:30 am tomorrow morning.
Now, to the seasoned journalist used to covering major upheavals all over the world, this kind of call to action is most probably quite common, something they would do with their eyes closed between sips of Johnny Walker Black Label. But for me this is absolutely panic stations. This is my own personal Pearl Harbour. Carly has just blown me out of the water.
Firstly, I can’t type. Actually , that’s not true, I can – with one finger. Secondly, I’ve never had any training what so ever in writing. I never even finished school. I wouldn’t know a comma from a split infinitive (if there is such a thing.) Thirdly, I don’t know where to begin – all I can think of are the really important meetings I have tomorrow that I need to make sure I get a good nights sleep for so I can be fresh and focused. If you need an image of what’s going on for me, just think of a pasty middle aged man sitting blurry eyed at his desk holding tightly on to his head to stop it from blowing off.
It’s my fault, I guess, for writing a book called The Magician’s Way. When you expose yourself as an authority on the art of making the impossible happen, you’re creating expectations that sooner or later you’re not going to live up to. Now, where ever I go everyone expects me to pull a rabbit out of the hat. “Ah, here’s William. He’ll get your car started again. Never mind that the engine’s just ceased.”
People think that magic is about having supernatural powers that allow one to over-ride any circumstance or condition in life. There is a subconscious assumption pervading the human psyche that if we could only have the power to totally control our selves and our environment that we could then rest easy, that we would at last be viable. As if when the weather is always perfect and others behave just the way we want them to and the trains arrive perfectly on time, then we’ll be safe to come out of our shells and experience the bliss we instinctively know we are meant to be enjoying on the good ship Planet Earth.
This is not a rant anymore, by the way. I’m not raging against being ambushed by an overzealous publicist. I’ve found my stream of consciousness, believe me. I might be academically challenged, but I do know a lot about magic. I’ve lived it for forty nine years and studied it intensively for twelve years. I’ve seen into the minds of thousands of souls – gotten to know them better than their closest relatives. I’ve worked with hundreds of individuals over periods of three to four years, observing and coaching them in their life process. I’ve got a good idea of what makes humans tick, what makes them great, what makes them pathetic. I know what makes people flow and what makes them stuck. It all comes down to one word: Orientation.
Your orientation is the sole determinant of what you end up experiencing in life. If you have ever wanted to know, like Bart Simpson, “who’s responsible” for what’s going on in your world, the answer lies entirely within you.
Orientation relates to what you’re making life about, where you’re coming from in any moment. And where you’re coming from, as I’ll show, creates the reality you surround yourself with. Magic, ultimately, is not about bending the laws of physics and the course of history to suit yourself. Rather, it is about changing your reality, and you change your reality by changing what you make life about.
The typical orientation of the unconscious, uninitiated being is survival. The unconscious, uninitiated being is obsessed with viability. Understandably so. You are a divine soul. Your true nature is pure creative spirit, and the basis of your creative power is that you are connected to everything through all time and space. As fate would have it, though, you chose an experience of individual existence, to be “some” thing that is separate from “every” thing. As Joseph Campbell, the mythology guru put it, you are the part of God that stands back and is able to behold your own wonder and beauty.
To achieve this sense of unique individuality, though, you had to individuate, you had to create an identity based on a separate sense of self. To cut a long story short, you did this by taking on a myth that you are not who you really are. You have become lost to your divinity, to the source of your creative power, which is your inherent connection to everything through all time and space. You took on beliefs of limitation, beliefs that you are an insignificant speck of nothing in a Universe too vast to comprehend. Once you’re born, it takes no time at all before you’re transformed from a god into a being of limited capacity and energy, coping against a massive tide of forces working against you.
Meteorites and comets are whizzing past the planet you live on, crazed terrorists are running around with weapons of mass destruction, disease and the ageing process are herding you towards the grave, you have to compete for affection from your loved ones and work hard for a promotion at work. If you weren’t so numb from the shock of physical reality you’d realize you’re fighting for your life every second of the day. It’s all about little you struggling to deal with the big world around you, unsupported, according to your beliefs, by anything outside of you.
So there you are, coping with your circumstances and your environment. You’ve accumulated a stack of cash, you’ve acquired a certain level of knowledge, you’ve gotten this far at work, got this many friends you can rely on, zip around in that flashy car, jump on so many flights a year. And there your Ego is going, “this is what I created, this is how well I am coping.”
There it is. The idea that it’s all you and nothing outside of yourself. Which re-enforces the notion that you are separate. The more you strive to cope the more separate you become. Separate from you own divine nature and separate from the hearts of others. The better we cope, the more we dry up inside. It gets us nowhere. Materially human beings are better off than at any other time in history, yet in the major developed countries of the world the best selling drugs are antidepressants, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills. We can’t bear the pain that coping creates.
We need success like we need a hole in the head. Coping is the bottom line cause of dis-ease and suffering in the world. This might sound outrageous, but the world doesn’t need another healing technique, it doesn’t need another wealth creation scheme, it doesn’t need another motivational speech or theory about how the universe works and how you can climb to the top of it. Everything you do to cope assumes you’re a victim, and belief creates reality. Coping creates separation and separation creates more chaos to cope with.
No, what the world needs now is magic. The conscious, initiated being knows that everything in the Universe is alive, connected, communicating and One. The magician strives for nothing, shuns coping. He or she assumes that they are a creator connected to everything through all time and space. They know that they are part of the whole and that Grace is drawing them ever closer towards their highest purpose and good.
Belief creates reality. A true magician is one who can resist the Egoic temptation to cope with life. As a result they remain connected to their divinity and feel the bliss of the Divine. The human benefit is that when we don’t have to cope we can do what we love, and truly doing what you love is the source of all real and lasting abundance. I can’t explain it, nor do I care to, it’s just plainly evident that when people trust life enough to live their true nature and purpose every form of richness manifests in their wake. It’s unbelievable. But true.
I know all this not simply because I’ve learned it and observed it in others. I’ve lived it. That’s how I can write an article without knowing where to begin, and how I wrote a best selling book without any formal education to speak of. When you stop and let your being come to rest, you become a channel for something indescribably beautiful and wondrous to come into the world through you. That’s what real magic is about. It’s about the sublime eternity you wake up in when you begin serving something bigger than your own desperation to survive.
So thanks, Carly! Thanks for snapping me out of my comfortable stupor. Three hours ago I was coping really well. Now I’m fully alive again.
