The secret to creating flow in your life by William Whitecloud
I have just returned from Sydney where I gave a series of talks on The Magician’s Way. I don’t know about my audiences, but I certainly enthused myself on both the joy and the possibility of creating a life that resembles a beautiful work of art. We are creators, and each and every one of us has the capacity to manifest the most awe-inspiring life (I was going to say imaginable, but actually I would say beyond what we can even imagine).
It is staggering for me to reflect on the truth that my fellow human beings and I are in actual fact Pure Divine Creative Spirit. We have an eternal, unlimited nature that can create anything. As I demonstrated at my talks, just because we assume something is not possible does not mean it can’t be done. For twenty years I struggled with golf, never going beyond being a chronic duffer. I seriously believed I could not play golf. And yet it took my friend, Kris Barkway, ten minutes to teach me to play sensational golf WITH MY EYES CLOSED!
The mystifying condition of humanness, for me, is that we are creators trapped in a paradigm of assumptions. We assume all sorts of limitations and then behave and act in ways that prove our assumptions. It’s almost as if we want to prove that our assumptions are correct – that we are limited. Whatever the reason or explanation, we are creators trapped in a paradigm of assumptions, and the saddest assumption of all is that we are not truly creators. We create in uncreative ways and then go, “You see, I can’t create!” But the truth is, the proof we offer to justify failure and limitation is just nonsense. We can learn to go way beyond what we thought we were capable of in every area of our lives and in any undertaking.
How well I remember learning to sell business information to large corporations and government departments. Boy, was I hopeless to start with. All around me salespeople were earning six figure salaries while I battled away on a $300 a week retainer. Of course, there were good reasons for my failure: the best clients were taken, I had the wrong accent, I wasn’t born with sales ability, the product wasn’t up to scratch, and so on. But what do you know, after sticking at it for a while I started to learn the ropes, and once I understood the game, I became the best salesperson my boss had ever employed – out of 5000 salespeople!
Experience has taught me that when I or anybody else does not succeed at something, it doesn’t mean it can’t be done, only that we are on the wrong path to what we want. As my mother is fond of saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” People who are great at what they do are rarely so simply because they were born to do it. You only have to scratch the surface to find that they are applying certain principles that make what they do work brilliantly.
There it is. The secret to success in anything is learning and applying the principles related to that subject. LEARNING AND APPLYING. And so it is with magic. While it looks impossible and sounds far fetched, the fact of the matter is that, like everything in life, it is subject to specific underlying principles, which, once learned and applied, create phenomenal results. I mean PHENOMENAL! The only thing separating us from the most vibrant health, soulful relationships, fulfilling creative expression and copious abundance is a handful of simple principles. We’re only ever a realisation away from being Gods.
Just as I came to play better golf and be an effective salesman by learning from people who were masters in their field, I have also chosen to adopt the principles used by master creators. For over twelve years I have studied the wisdom of the ages and observed thousands of people in their creative process, and I can honestly say that all effective creating is never accomplished without certain elements being present. You can achieve all sorts of things in your life, but if any one of these elements is missing you have not achieved anything by magic. You have done it, not manifested it. You have strived, not created.
There is, however, one principle that will transform your life - your world - your creations – all by itself. You might want to think of it as Lord of the Principles. King of Kings. Because, if you choose to serve this law, you will transport yourself to a dimension of experience beyond anything you ever dreamed of. Deny it and “you will be dashed against the rocks by reason of your own folly” as that bible of creating, The Kybalion, so succinctly puts it.
Many a fool has overlooked this principle, failing to find in its simplicity and its vulnerability the astonishing power it holds. But there is nothing on earth more potent than Love.
Not long ago I was walking along an unfamiliar beach with my six year-old son, Tennessee. Up ahead of us, protruding from the sand rose a magnificent column of granite. “Wow!” cried Tennessee. “That’s going to be fun to climb.” And off he ran. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that scaling the shear walls of this colossal giant finger of stone would be absolutely impossible. Next thing, though, he was calling down to me from the top of the rock. “Look at me, Dad. I’m an eagle.” There he was dipping his outstretched arms from side to side with a look of total euphoria on his face.
How in the world had he scaled those shear walls, I fretted. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that, hidden from my approaching view, the rock actually sloped gently down to the sand. I had ASSUMED that my first impression of the rock was a complete perspective. My son, however, had been guided by his passion. All he knew was that he wanted to climb that spectacular obelisk; it never occurred to him that it couldn’t be done.
Our hearts aren’t guided only by what we can see or touch or hear or smell. Our hearts are connected to everything through all time and space. If our hearts want something then they know there is a way. Our minds are the source of our intellectual genius, but our hearts are the source of our creative genius. The most functional measure of whether something is possible or not is whether our hearts are in it or not.
My family are definitely my greatest teachers. Last year my wife, Christian, indulged her passion for decorating and design by buying a house and spending six weeks renovating it, after which she promptly sold it for a $70 000 profit. A quick stab at my calculator revealed that she could renovate eight such houses a year and earn us over $600 000. Imagine my dismay when she casually informed me that she “didn’t feel called to do it again”. As much as I urged her, she wasn’t interested. Thank God! Not long after, interest rates started going up and property prices have slumped significantly in our area. Instead of having a goose laying golden eggs for us we would have dead albatrosses hanging around our necks.
That kind of instinctive sensibility is not taught at school. You can learn all kinds of amazing stuff: healing techniques, writing techniques, meditation techniques, tax minimisation strategies. But someone else’s formulas and techniques will only take you so far. There isn’t a manual that covers even a fraction of what you will come up against in life. Only your heart knows how to find the path of least resistance in everything you face and undertake. Until you learn how to follow your heart, living your life by magic will elude you.
Certainly, you should continue to value conventional learning. Just remember, though, to put your horse in front of your cart. In creative terms, learning the art of following your heart comes before everything else. And once you can, you’ll understand why! Only when you learn to fly and look back down do you realise how the path you’ve been struggling along goes nowhere
