Its a Mystery by William Whitecloud

In the movie, Shakespeare In Love, Geoffrey Rush plays a lovably shonky theater owner who, whenever asked how something improbable is going to work out, always replies: “I don’t know; it’s a mystery.”

I remember Darren Eden visiting me in Byron Bay around the time of the new millennium New Year’s eve, and the two of us discussing a job offer he had recently received. Based on his experience as a corporate change consultant, he had been invited to join a successful corporate development company that specialized in energizing individuals within organizations to perform more creatively and productively. The work promised to fulfill his passion for empowering others, and also meant that he would get paid good money to travel to exotic locations first class. It sounded like a great opportunity.

As Darren and I talked about the exciting prospect of facilitating self transformation within the corporate world, something came to me, and I put it to Darren. “Why don’t you come and work with me?”

“You know, I’d much rather come and work for you,” said Darren, pleasantly surprised. “What would you be able to pay me?”

“Nothing for the time being.”

“What role do you have for me?” asked Darren, somewhat deflated.

“Nothing for the time being,” I admitted, “but something will come up.”

Darren needed half a day to think about my offer, but he ended up accepting it over a six figure salary with benefits. The only way he could explain his seemingly rash decision was by saying: “It just rings true.”

Well, the person who was designated to take over the Sydney trainings from me pulled out two weeks later and Darren’s role had very quickly emerged. Today he is a full partner in the Magician’s Way, an enterprise with phenomenal rewards and prospects for all who are involved with it. Meanwhile, the owner of the company he was originally going to work for died shortly after Darren began working with me, and the business he had founded collapsed.

That’s the way we work at the Magician’s Way. We don’t need to know how things will work out, we only need to know that it rings true for all concerned. Claire Scott Lister began with us in much the same way as Darren. The wages I offered her to start with were an insult to a university educated professional with both media and marketing experience as well as a wealth of experience in personal and spiritual development. To begin with Claire was very insistent that I pay her a much bigger salary. “I can’t do that,” I apologized, “but if it’s true for you to work with us, as it is for me, then something we can’t foresee will emerge to remunerate you beyond your expectation.”

Claire did make the choice to join the Magician’s Way team. It was true for her. And sure enough, in time Claire’s true talents and gifts emerged and circumstances resulted that saw her become our senior coach and session provider. Now Claire is in her element creatively and much happier with her remuneration. And she’s only getting started. She’s on a path that is going to take her a long way. At the same time, Claire has been a credit to the Magician’s Way. We wouldn’t have gotten to where we are today without her.

I sometimes wonder how much opportunity is lost, how much potential goes wasted, just because people can’t see how following their heart will work out. Most people are tied up in things that don’t honor their power and serve the fulfillment of their creative spirit, all because they need their whole life mapped out before they’ll take a single step towards it. And, sadly, they never know the magic and greatness that could so easily have been theirs.

One of the most persistent criticisms of The Magician’s Way is that the story does not go on to reveal Mark Vale successfully getting his life together. As one reader summed up the general disappointment, “Sure we get to learn the seven secrets of magic, but we don’t get any proof that they actually worked in his life.” It’s absurd to expect a story would offer any definitive proof of magic, but it just goes to show how deeply entrenched in the human psyche that need for re-assurance is.

At the end of the day there is no proof. There is only the question of whether someone wants the freedom their heart craves for more than the certainty their mind demands. For those who choose their hearts, all I can say is, “It will work out fantastically.” How will it work out? I don’t know; it’s a mystery. A big, beautiful, exquisite mystery.
