No Soul, No Magic by William Whitecloud
Talking to a group of friends recently about what I planned to write next, one of them said, “The next book you write should be your life story, William... That would be the greatest story and the best testament of this work.”
Maybe my friend has a point. Certainly I find it hard to separate my story from teaching others about magic. At recent workshops I have felt compelled to share my journey so that I can illustrate just what it takes to affect a profound transformation in one’s life. The story I tell goes like this:
In the 1980’s I was completely ruined. I had a severe drug habit that had left me financially destitute. Some years I would have spent the price of a good house on my addiction. My marriage was shattered and every relationship I stumbled through was a vicious, loveless affair. I slept with weapons under my pillow to protect me from my so called friends. Nothing I ever did contributed to the upliftment of another soul, only to increasing the misery of others. And, to cap it off, I was suffering terribly from the physical and psychological effects of an incurable, life threatening illness. I had created nothing and destroyed everything, including my own life.
Fast-forward to today and it’s as if my life is the mirror opposite of what and where I was then. For a good 12 or 13 years I have been on a path that allows me to enjoy the greatness within myself and others. Early on that path I met my soul mate and we have enjoyed almost 11 blissful years together, creating in that time the most amazing family and life. I live in a community of the most creative and lively friends, all of whom are so encouraging and supportive of who I am and what I do. Now I am completely healed of my illness and have the energy to participate fully and effortlessly in life. What I do now contributes to the wellbeing and happiness of thousands of people. I am an artist who uses a rich pallet of talents to manifest impossible creations. I write books and parent angels and introduce people to their souls and continually make money by accident.
My friend Nyck Jeans, author of Letter from New York, once told me that I was the only person he had ever known to truly change. Not just acquire a bit more of this and lose a bit of that, but become another person entirely. Nyck is someone with a vast experience of life and people, and I might not appreciate my own self transformation were it not for his words, because now that I’m here I feel like I’ve always been here.
Yet how could I have known that this could be my destiny? From those pathetic circumstances way back then, how could I have dared to dream that I could create what I have? How could I even step onto the path and begin walking in this direction? How did I get here? And here’s the answer:
I met someone who introduced me to my soul. That’s when it all changed: when I realised that I had a soul, and that my soul could take me to where my highest destiny would be fulfilled. I then made the intention to fulfil that destiny, whatever it was, and then I lived with the assumption that my intention would manifest. Now here I am. There’s nothing more to it. If any one tells you there is something more in essence to living by magic, they don’t know what they are talking about.
You might find marvellous ways of manipulating others and life to give you more of something, but that won’t change you, that won’t bring you to magic. A magician is someone who has a living relationship with their soul. They engage it with intention and encourage it with positive assumption. The soul does the rest.
If you truly want to live your life by magic, the first thing to do is meet your soul. That’s the Magician’s Way.
