The Individuation Exercise by Darren Eden

My article this month will take you through the Individuation Process.

The most important thing to be clear on before taking yourself through this process and indeed any Magician’s Way process, is the premise on which it is based. It’s the understanding and application of powerful premises that lead to the creation of magical end results, not the rote reliance on processes.

The premise of the Individuation Process is that we are Creators. We are divine beings who are connected to everything through all time and space. It is this connection that gives us our creative power, yet in order for us to come to earth and have an experience of individual existence we had to individuate, we had to create a sense of separation from everything else. Further to this premise we create this separation by seeking validation of our true nature in early childhood.

The Mayans had a proverb: “The future of the world lies in the child. Mother must hold the baby close so that it belongs in the world, and Father must take the child up to the highest hill so that it can see how the world is.” In this proverb we see the two forms of validation we seek in childhood: nurturing from the feminine and acknowledgement from the masculine. We want our mothers to love and nurture us and our fathers to see us and validate that we can bring who we are into the world. When this validation is not met, we feel a pain, which we resolve by explaining why we are hurting – we make up beliefs about ourselves, others and the world. The beliefs you take on define everything – give everything a name – and the more you define things the more separate everything becomes.

Your beliefs give you your identity, your sense of separation from everything else, but in that separation you lose your connection, your creative power. The side effect of the individuation process is that it leaves you with a sense of being a victim of fate. When you realise that as a Creator you consciously created your Victim self to experience separation, you are no longer subject to your Victim consciousness. You realise it’s simply a story you made up. You realise there’s nothing to fix or heal. You simply choose to orientate in life as a Creator instead of a Victim.

So with this premise firmly in mind here’s the Individuation Process for you. I suggest that you either record the process and then play it back, thereby effectively guiding yourself through your own individuation journey, or, preferably, get someone else to lead you through it.

The Individuation Process

Take a deep breath and acknowledge what you’re thinking and feeling. Imagine there’s a ball of light, the size of a soccer ball, about a metre above your head and that it’s the brightest light you could ever conceive of. This ball of light is a symbol of your Greatness, your true Creator self. Imagine it floating down so that it rests on the crown of your head. It then floats down further so that it completely surrounds your head and drops further still until it completely surrounds your body. Imagine now that you’ve become the ball of light.

Now, as the light, imagine you are travelling through space headed for Planet Earth. You’re going to be born into human form so you can bring your essence into three dimensional reality. Imagine that you know what you’d love to create during your time there. Imagine you know what your purpose is, what your passion is, and what gifts and talents you have to support that purpose.

Imagine now that you’ve just been conceived and you’re growing inside your mothers’ womb. Notice your need for validation in the form of nurturing. What is your experience in relation to that need? What’s going on for your mother, and between your mother and you, during the pregnancy?

Now imagine your birth. What did you experience during your first act of physical separation? What were you making up about yourself, others and the world?

Imagine growing into an infant and experience the first 18 months of your life. To what degree did you receive the love and nurturing from your mother you were looking for? Notice what assumptions you made about your relationship with the feminine.

Now imagine moving on into the masculine phase of the individuation process where you are seeking orientation from your father. The father phase is considered to be between the age of 3 and 4 years old. Notice to what degree your father validates you. To what extent does he see you and acknowledge you? Did he take you to the highest hill and show you how it is? What beliefs did you create about yourself, others and world as a result of looking for validation from the masculine?

Now follow yourself as you begin to experience life with your assumptions on board. Imagine going through your primary school years and then your secondary school years. What major events occur to you that re-enforce the assumptions you formed in that individuation phase? How is your identity confirming itself as a result of these beliefs being re-enforced?

Take yourself progressively through your adult life and receive the major events that took place and the decisions you made that have led you to this moment. See how your assumptions have played out throughout that time. What story have you made up about life? What personal myth have you created?

Now come back to normal consciousness and begin writing down your experience of the journey you have just been through. Take your time. Allow yourself at least twenty minutes to write down everything you received. Your intuition will continue to inform you of each phase as you write.

Darren EdenOnce you’re complete you can share your experience with someone else. This will further ground what you received.

I recommend taking yourself through the Individuation Process regularly. Not only will you consistently see the victim consciousness you created from different angles, you will come to appreciate the beauty of the fact that you created it to be here. You’re a Creator. You’re a God.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a truly magical New Year.
